Review: The Halal Guys
This is a post written by Rachel Trotter on behalf of The Halal Guys.
The Halal Guys has just opened! What started out as a street cart in New York City, has arrived in Orange County. In 1990 the Halal Guys opened and created lines wrapped around the block at all hours of the day and night. As their popularity increased, they moved into brick and mortar and expanded. Now we get to enjoy their creations here!
I was invited to the opening of their first Orange County location in the heart of Costa Mesa. I brought the pickiest eater in the world with me, aka my husband. We each ordered a platter, which includes fresh lettuce, tomato, and your choice of meat over a bed of rice with their famous white sauce.
We both loved it! Yes, the pickiest eater ever, loved it! The rice was perfectly cooked and well seasoned, the veggies were fresh and crisp, the meat was tender and just dang good. You could tell the cuts of meat were fresh and quality. I’ve had other types of gyro meat and this was the best I’ve had. Others seem to be overpowering with their seasonings, but this one was flavorful without being in your face.
The perfect compliment to their meat is their white sauce. It is creamy and a bit tangy. When you try it, you will understand why it has gathered so much fame! It is also great paired with their falafal cakes.
They also have a hot sauce that is HOT! They should rename it ‘What the Halal?’ sauce. The staff was kind enough to warn me, but I’ll pass on to you, that hot sauce is meant for professionals. No amateurs, please!
Overall, the Halal Guys are bound to become a new craving for Orange County. With a warm, casual atmosphere and delicious food in generous portions, I know I’ll be back!
