Last week I mentioned that Pei Wei had introduced three new lettuce wraps this summer as well as a few other new menu items. I finally got a chance to taste them and I wanted to share my experience with you.
I dined at the Laguna Niguel location which is one of their newer restaurants. I love the ambiance and the decor when you walk inside. There is a lot of brick and dark woods and the open kitchen really gives it a spacious feel. They even have one of those fancy Coke Freestyle Machines at this location. Your drink choices will be endless!
One of the things I love to order when I come to Pei Wei is edamame. I love it and could eat it for breakfast lunch and dinner so I was excited to try their new zesty Ginger Orange Edamame. They were really unique and gave the regular salted version a new twist. You can taste just the right amount of garlic and see the orange zest on the pods. They are served warm so you really capture the freshness and flavor when you pop these into your mouth.
We also trued the spicy Szechuan Green Beans. I am not normally a fan of really spicy food but these had just the right amount of spice to them. They were not too soggy and had just the right amount of crisp to them with a pungent flavor of chili’s, peppers and onions.
I also wanted to try one of their new lettuce wraps so I opted for the Korean Steak lettuce wrap. They are served in crisp cups of iceberg lettuce these wraps and are much different than the traditional chicken lettuce wrap. It had wok-seared marinated steak tossed with fresh carrots, bean sprouts, red onions, scallions, cucumbers, toasted sesame seeds, and was drizzled with a Korean red chile sauce.I found them to be a little on the wet side but they were still still very flavorful.
My kids are very simple when it comes to food so they chose the honey seared chicken. It had a nice sweet honey glaze and was served with those crispy rice noodles. What I love is that you can order it with half brown rice and half white rice. This way everyone is happy. For those who want to for go the rice you can substitute your rice for a garden salad for $2 more.
For our last entree we ordered the orange peel chicken. I really enjoyed this dish and loved how they incorporated crunchy snap peas into it. The chile bean garlic sauce is tangy but not overpowering, and the orange peel, scallions, , and carrots are a also a good addition.
If you are still hungry at the end of your meal you can help yourself to a bucket of fortune cookies or even some fresh cut orange slices. There is something here for everyone. Pei Wei is the perfect place for a quick business lunch or even somewhere to take a friend out.
